There Was A Crooked Man

There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile.

He found a crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile.

He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse,

And they all lived together in a little crooked house.

This is my illustration for this nursery rhyme. I wanted to do something moody and brooding.  I was greatly inspired by the work of Arthur Rackham.  He was a golden age illustrator and his illustrations for Alice in Wonderland were a big influence on this piece.  These images show an early stage of the piece and the final piece.

The first image shows my pen work on a toned ground that I digitally painted afterward.
